This tour is familiar to the official work “LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA” and the super masterpiece “WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT (Virtuoso 379/380)” which becomes the best masterpiece, but this work is earlier than any of its earlier. “WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT” is “UK” leg, “LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA” is the record of “North America # 3” on the final stage. On the other hand, the rich field performance of this work was a concert that was the 20th show of “North America # 1” at the beginning of the tour.
As mentioned above, there are many pre-existing ones in this show, but among them the highest peak among them was “Sirene label” CLOSE ENCOUNTERS “. 結成10周年を掲げ、黄金の70年代を総括していた“TORMATO TOUR”。その前半期を代表するサウンドボード・アルバムが最高峰クオリティで登場です。
その代表サウンドボードが記録されたのは「1978年９月19日リッチフィールド公演」。このショウはFM放送され、古くからサウンドボード録音が数々の名作を生み出し、マニアに愛されてきた大定番です。本作は、そんな有名サウンドボードの最高峰を更新する１本なのです。もちろん、最大のポイントはクオリティにあるわけですが、まずはショウのポジション。結成10周年を祝った“TORMATO TOUR 1978-1979”の全体像から確認してみましょう。

これが70年代最後の輝きだったワールドツアーの概要。このツアーは公式作品『LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA』や最高傑作となる超名盤『WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT（Virtuoso 379/380）』がお馴染みですが、本作はそのどれよりも初期。『WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT』は「英国」レッグであり、『LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA』は最終盤「北米#3」の記録。それに対し、本作のリッチフィールド公演は、ツアー冒頭「北米#1」の20公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
前述の通り、このショウには幾多の既発が存在するわけですが、その中でこれまで最高峰とされてきたのはSireneレーベルの『CLOSE ENCOUNTERS』でした。10年以上前に発掘された新マスターで、サウンドの鮮度がバツグンなだけでなく、既発ではカットされていた「On The Silent Wings Of Freedom」も収録。「Heart Of The Sunrise」に１分20秒ほどの欠けがありましたが、それも別マスターで補填され、フルショウをシームレスに完全収録。完全体ライヴアルバムの衝撃を振りまいた。当時の専門誌でも「ようやくコンサートの全編が聴けるようになった」「この時期の録音としては驚異的なクオリティ」「ミックスのバランスも良く、低域から高域まできれいに出ており、このツアーではベストかもしれない」と大絶賛されました。
それだけの衝撃作だけに大好評のうちに完売・廃盤。長らく入手困難となっていました。本作は、そんな『CLOSE ENCOUNTERS』のマスターを再デジタル化し、さらに最新リマスターでブラッシュ・アップした決定盤なのです。そのアップグレードぶりには目を見張る。『CLOSE ENCOUNTERS』からして過去最高だったわけですが、本作は一層クッキリ。もちろん、無闇矢鱈な音圧稼ぎをしているわけではありません。混濁気味だった各音域をキチンと整理し、各楽器の輪郭を浮き立たせた。それにより、塊に聞こえていたベースやバスドラでさえ鮮やかにセパレートし、レンジも拡大して聞こえるようになったのです。さらに、マスターはテープの各面で若干サウンドが異なって記録されていたのですが、本作は統一感たっぷりで全編を貫いているのです。
実のところ、この放送は大元から緻密なミックスと言うよりは、荒っぽい直結感が個性。それだけに、磨き上げた本作も「まるでオフィシャル」とはちょっとニュアンスが違うものの、だからこそ演奏とのシンクロ感が凄い。フランジャーのかかったベースが絡むスペーシーな感覚、「Awaken」で浮遊感を醸すジョン・アンダーソンの歌声……。全楽器の全ノートが鼓膜を飛び越えて脳みそに直接流し込まれるような感覚に襲われるのですが、特に圧倒的なのはスティーヴ・ハウとリック・ウェイクマンのキーボード。その乱舞する妙技が隅から隅まで超鮮明。華麗なソロはもちろんのこと、１フレーズのニュアンスからちょっとしたエフェクトに至るまで脳みそに飛び込んでくる。ベースに絡んでスペーシー感覚を演出するギターのエフェクトや豪快なパン。逆にリックはソロパートでまったくエコーのない「ヘンリー八世」を披露し、指使いの細かなタッチまではっきりと分かる。それらすべてが耳を澄ませて複雑なアンサンブルを解きほぐす必要さえなく「バッキングでこんな弾き方してたのか」と発見し続ける123分間なのです。

“TORMATO TOUR”と言えば『WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT』にトドメを刺すわけですが、あの大名盤は言わばオフィシャル代わり。音楽作品としての美しさを究めたライヴアルバムでした。それに対し、本作は（ちょっとだけ）異形な大傑作。磨き抜かれた均整の美よりも、生演奏そのもののスリル、妙技をえぐり出し、目の前に叩きつける。美世界に翻弄するのではなく、力強くグイグイと引き込む強烈なステレオサウンドボード・アルバムなのです。
70年代の総括でもあった“TORMATO TOUR”。その血気盛んな序盤の演奏が脳みそにねじ込まれるアンサンブル・アルバム。その最高峰盤。ぜひ、永久保存プレス２CDで存分にご堪能ください。

本編プレス２CDは、黄金の70年代を総括する“TORMATO TOUR”のフルショウとシンクロできるステレオサウンドボード・アルバム。2018年の技術で磨き上げられた史上最高峰盤です。しかし、技術の進歩によって最高峰を更新したのはライヴアルバムだけではありませんでした。本作は、海外マニアが長年に渡ってアップグレードを繰り返してきた“TORMATO TOUR”の決定的マルチカメラ映像作品。その2018年最新版なのです。
既発をご存じの方ならすでにピンと来ていると思いますが、そうではない方のためにも基本からご説明していきましょう。そんな本作に収められているのは１回のショウ形式の映像。しかし、その素材は１回だけではありません。“TORMATO TOUR 1978-1979”をテーマに無数の映像と録音を駆使してショウを再現構築。凄まじいまでの情熱が結晶となった１枚なのです。このマニアは、これまでも同じコンセプトで映像作を発表してきましたが、何度もクオリティ・アップして更新。前回は65分止まりでしたが、今回は遂に２時間に及ぶフルショウ作品に到達したのです。
まず、何と言っても素材の品質・物量からして凄い。ここで映像が使用されたコンサートを一覧してみましょう。

以上の８公演分。前回の５公演から大幅に増えたボリュームだけで圧倒的ですが、よくよく見ると前回作に使われていたロンドン公演やウィニペグ公演の映像がない。すべてのシーンで見直し、他公演に差し替えられているのです。今回は『LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA』も活用してのフルショウですが、それはあくまで一部。一番の基本になっているのは、８ミリ撮影された貴重なオーディエンス映像です。“TORMATO TOUR”と言えば、細切れの８ミリ映像がいくつもあることでコア・コレクターにも知られていますが、それらをかき集めてショウの曲順通りに再構成している。８ミリフィルムは、いずれもサイレントなため、どの曲のどのパートかを判別するだけでも鬼のような作業なのですが、アングルもクオリティも違う数秒単位の映像を精査・分析し、曲にピッタリとシンクロさせている。想像しただけで気が遠くなる作業……フルショウに到達するまで何年もかかったわけです。
もちろん、元はサイレント・フィルムであっても、本作は違う。貴重な８ミリフィルム（しかも、極上クオリティ！）には、極上のサウンドが重ねられています。おおよそは超傑作『WEMBLEY 1978 FINAL NIGHT』にもなった「1978年10月28日ウェンブリー公演」サウンドボードが使用されているわけですが、それだけではない。音声も映像に最適なものを求めて無数の録音を駆使。その細かさも超人的。例えば「Future Times/Rejoice」では本編プレス２CDと同じ「1978年９月リッチフィールド公演」と「1978年10月オークランド公演」をマッシュアップして充て、「Roundabout（の３番）」は「1979年６月のシカゴ公演」をシンクロさせている。音声に関しては前回作よりも使用ソースが減っていますが、恐らくは音声を重視して映像の方を合わせていったのでしょう。シームレスな視聴感がグンと向上しているのです。しかも、そのシンクロ度と来たら弦を弾く指先、ジョン・アンダーソンの口元までピッタリと揃えている。ホンの数分／数秒を制作するだけでも大変な作業を、丸２時間のマルチカメラに仕上げるとは……。もう脱帽しかない凄絶な映像作品です。

もちろん８ミリ・フィルムが主役の本作は、オフィシャル作品のような完成度ではありません。現代基準には照らせないピントだったり、演奏中に衣装がコロコロ変わったり、ところどころ埋めきれないシーンが静止画になったりもします。しかし、それはどうでもいい事。発掘された無声の８ミリ映像に驚喜にして、そのあまりの嬉しさに「観ながら楽しめるカタチにしよう」と思い立ってしまった心意気、そして何度も推敲し、遂に２時間の作品まで成し遂げた情熱が素晴らしすぎる。単に貴重なフィルム記録から、ライヴ作品にまで昇華させた１枚。どうぞ、本編プレス２CDと併せ、2018年だからこその超傑作を存分にご堪能ください。
