Just 10 years have passed since the Stones restarted in the 2010s to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the group’s formation. Speaking of their 2012 live activities, I don’t think it’s just recently, but the passage of time is really fast … 10 years have passed since then. The stage of this year is the restart of Stones that enthusiasts all over the world have been waiting for, so various sound sources and images appeared in every performance, but even among them, one night that should be a symbol of 2012 Stones is “ONE MORE SHOT” That is Newark on December 15th. As far as I miss it now, the live broadcast that is customary on their tour was realized on this day, and of course, various items were produced.
Under such circumstances, the masterpiece that took a different approach would be “SECOND NIGHT IN NEWARK 2012: ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING”. Since it was broadcast live, it is natural that the stereo sound board albums will be crowded. Under such circumstances, we succeeded in showing a different aspect of the performance by releasing it with the best audience recording that we obtained independently. It is nostalgic that it was highly evaluated by enthusiasts even before the existence of the previous live broadcast. In terms of the sound board, but the value of the audience recording has not declined, it may be similar to the popular title “SYDNEY 1973 1ST NIGHT” released last week, although it is of a different age.
Ten years have passed since then, and the purpose of this time is to show the release of Newark’s stereo sound board recording, which was not released at that time. Of course, after 10 years, the items at that time are difficult to obtain or are often overlooked, and I would like to keep it as one of the live broadcast sound sources from the American tour that has become customary since 1981 Hampton. A classic among the classics. However, there is no trick to put it out as it is. Therefore, this time, we connected the scenes before the appearance of Stones from the previous “SECOND NIGHT IN NEWARK 2012: ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING” audience, aiming for the best version as a document of the same day.
Because this day is an important day when the 2012 Stones Show was broadcast to the world. Therefore, there was a scene that should be called the “previous theory” before the appearance of Stones. Introducing a hot moderator who invites the excitement of the spectacle show that is about to start by calling guests who are scheduled to co-star, and the enthusiastic audience. This exciting introduction was leaked from the live broadcast. This part is also important as part of the show. That’s why I dared to connect the scenes before they appeared on stage with audience recordings, which had nothing to do with the live performances of Stones.

The main part of the live is, of course, a perfect stereo sound board, but now I really miss it. For a while from the start of the live, the instability of the sound balance that tends to occur in live broadcasting is scattered, and the graininess of Darryl Jones’ bass is particularly noticeable in the first half. Not only is this nostalgic, but when I ask it again, it’s very fresh. It’s a good example of how well his seemingly overlooked bass play supports the Stones.
Speaking of the unnatural balance unique to live broadcasting, it is nostalgic and smiling that the ambient microphone that captures the state of the audience seats in the part that encourages the audience to sing in “Miss You” picked up a nearby singing voice. However, if you re-listen to the whole live, you can see from Keith Corner that the sound of his guitar is well balanced like Stones.
And after all, the appearance of a guest who should be a live broadcast of Stones is the best in history on this day. Co-starring with active artists such as John Mayer and Lady Gaga is still an impressive scene, but “Who Do You Love” with the Black Keys is undeniably giving a small impression. I think he was the best performer of the day’s co-starring with the guests.

Normally, the appearance of guests in the live broadcast of Stones will be completed by the middle of the live, but Newark, which was the stage of the day, is the land of New Jersey. If that’s the case, I can’t help but call Bruce Springsteen … Then, the unusual treatment that appeared in the second half of the live was truly Springsteen. When the performance starts, the stroke sound of a non-Keith guitar is occasionally heard. This is exactly what he did, and it’s funny now that the guitar solo played by Springsteen with a baton touch from Ronnie in the interlude ended in a “monitor doesn’t sound good” development.
However, what has changed significantly now is the energetic appearance of Charlie throughout the whole story. It was unpredictable at the time that he would disappear almost 10 years from here. What was taken for granted at that time is now really precious. Among them, “Midnight Rambler” stands out with Charlie’s intense drumming with the appearance of nostalgic Mick Taylor. Taylor’s phrases and plays that hustle and play are really nostalgic.
It’s not just a nostalgic live that has passed 10 years, but a stereo sound board recording that captures the starting point of activities in the elderly mode, and Charlie was still alive and well. A classic live that you want to keep at hand as a superb sound quality document. Enjoy the nostalgic Newark show to your heart’s content with the longest version suitable for its latest release. Even if it seems to be just recently, there is no doubt that the 2012 Stones, which are 10 years ago … will feel fresh.

2010年代を迎えてストーンズがグループの結成50周年を記念して再始動してくれた年からもちょうど10年の歳月が経過しました。彼らの2012年のライブ活動と言えば、つい最近のような気がしてならないものですが、時の流れというのは本当に早い…あれから10年が経ったのですね。この年のステージは世界中のマニアが待ち望んだストーンズの再始動ということでどの公演も様々な音源や映像が現れたものですが、そうした中でも2012年ストーンズの象徴というべき一夜が「ONE MORE SHOT」こと12月15日のニューアーク。彼らのツアーでは恒例となるライブ生中継がこの日実現し、当然ながら様々なアイテムを生み出したことも今となっては懐かしい限り。
そうした中で違ったアプローチを取った名盤が「SECOND NIGHT IN NEWARK 2012: ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING」でしょう。生中継された以上、ステレオ・サウンドボードのアルバムが乱立するのは当たり前。そんな中で独自入手の極上オーディエンス録音にてリリースしてみせたことで、同公演の違う側面を見せることに成功。先の生中継という存在を前にしてもなおマニアから高く評価されたのがまた懐かしい。サウンドボードがありながら、それでもオーディエンス録音の価値が下がっていないという点においては、年代が違えど先週リリースされた大好評タイトル「SYDNEY 1973 1ST NIGHT」と相通じるものがあるのではないでしょうか。
あれから10年の歳月が経過し、当時リリースしなかったニューアークのステレオ・サウンドボード録音を今リリースしてみせるのが今回の目的。当然ながら10年の経過によって当時のアイテムは入手困難、あるいは見過ごされがちになっていますし、81年ハンプトン以降で恒例となったアメリカ・ツアーからの生放送音源の一つとして手に置いておきたい定番中の定番。とはいえそのまま出すのでは芸がない。そこで今回はストーンズ登場前の場面を先の「SECOND NIGHT IN NEWARK 2012: ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING」オーディエンスからつなげ、同日のドキュメントとしてのベスト・バージョンを目指しました。
というのもこの日は2012年のストーンズ・ショーが世界に中継された重要な日。それ故にストーンズ登場前の「前説」と呼ぶべき場面があった。共演予定のゲストを連呼し、これから始まるスペクタクルショウのわくわく感を誘う熱い司会者の紹介、それに熱狂する観衆の様子。この興奮を誘うイントロダクションは、生中継からは漏れてました。この部分はショウの一部としても重要。ストーンズのライブ演奏とは関係のない、あるいは彼らがステージに現れる前の場面を敢えてオーディエンス録音で繋げたのには、そうした事情があるのです。

ライブ本編は当然ながら完璧なステレオ・サウンドボードとなる訳ですが、今となってはこれが本当に懐かしい。ライブ開始からしばらくは生中継にありがちなサウンド・バランスの不安定さが散見され、中でもダリル・ジョーンズのベースの粒立ちが前半で目立ちます。これがまた懐かしいというだけでなく、改めて聞いてみると非常に新鮮。一見見過ごされがちな彼のベース・プレイがどれほど堅実にストーンズを支えてくれているのかということを再確認させてくれる好例でしょう。
生中継ならではの不自然なバランスと言えば「Miss You」で観客に合唱を促すパートで客席の様子を捉えるアンビエントマイクがよりによって近くの音痴な歌声を拾ってしまったのがまた懐かしくも微笑ましい。しかしライブ全体を聞き直してみると、キース・コーナーからは彼のギターの音もしっかりと鳴るストーンズらしいバランスになっているのが解ります。
それに何と言ってもストーンズの生中継ライブ名物というべきゲストの登場がこの日は史上最高とも言えるほど豪華な顔ぶれ。現役バリバリなジョン・メイヤーやレディ・ガガといったアーティストとの共演は今なお印象的な場面ですが、そうした中で小ぶりな印象を与える感が否めないブラック・キーズとの「Who Do You Love」こそ、この日のゲストとの共演の中で一番の成果を挙げていたのではないでしょうか。

いつもならストーンズのライブ生中継におけるゲストの登場はライブの中盤までに済まされるものですが、この日の舞台となったニューアークはニュージャージーの土地。となればブルース・スプリングスティーンを呼ばない訳にはいかない…そこでライブが後半を迎えての登場となった異例の扱いがさすがはスプリングスティーン。演奏が始まるとキースでないギターのストローク音がたまに鳴っています。これが正に彼によるもので、間奏でロニーからバトンタッチしてスプリングスティーンが弾いたギターソロがいかにも「モニターよく聞こえません」的な展開で終わったのがまた今となっては微笑ましい。
ですが、それ以上に今となっては大きく意味合いが変わってしまったのが全編を通して元気いっぱいなチャーリーの姿。ここからほぼ10年後に彼がいなくなってしまう事など、当時はさすがに予想できませんでした。この時に当たり前だと思われていたことが今となっては本当に尊い。そうした中でも「Midnight Rambler」はこれまた懐かしのミック・テイラー登場と共にチャーリーの激しいドラミングが際立っている。やたらとハッスルして弾きまくるテイラーのフレーズやプレイも実に懐かしいもの。
単に10年の歳月が経過した懐かしいライブというだけでなく、メンバー全員が高齢なモードでの活動のスタート地点を捉えたステレオ・サウンドボード録音であり、なおかつチャーリーがバリバリに健在であった時代の極上音質ドキュメントとしても改めて手元に置いておきたい定番ライブ。その最新版リリースに相応しい最長バージョンにて、今となっては懐かしのニューアーク・ショーを心ゆくまでお楽しみください。つい最近のように思えても実は10年前…という2012年型ストーンズが新鮮に感じられること間違いなし。
